After three successful, the Croatian Society of Agricultural Economists (HAED) is organizing the fourth international scientific-professional conference Innovation and Agribusiness with the central theme “Climate Change and Sustainable Bioeconomy”.

Problems related to environmental degradation and excessive greenhouse gas emissions caused by climate change have been the most important global, but also national, regional and local political issues for decades. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The consequences are felt by everyone and affect all sectors of the economy, of which agriculture, forestry, fisheries, the energy sector and tourism are the most affected, as their success depends largely on climatic factors.

For Europe, the IPCC report predicts an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions, including sea heat waves, and warns that a 2°C temperature rise will have critical impact on nature and people. Higher temperatures and more intense weather will also lead to huge costs for the economy and adversely affect countries’ ability to produce food. On the other hand, the Food and Agriculture Organisation predicts that demand for food will increase by 70% by 2050 due to population growth, but also because of the expected economic prosperity of the world’s population. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is necessary to take measures to increase food production and at the same time reduce negative impact on the climate.

The answer to these challenges can be found in the sustainable bioeconomy. Its sectors have a strong innovation potential thanks to the use of science and technology and local and traditional knowledge. In order to make the most of this potential, it is necessary to accelerate the transition to food and agricultural systems that are sustainable, healthy, nutrition-oriented, resource-efficient, resilient, circular and inclusive. This includes the conversion of organic waste, residues and food waste into valuable and safe products from biological raw materials, where agribusiness can demonstrate its potential through various innovative processes and products.

With an annual turnover of €2.3 trillion and employing 8.2% of the EU workforce, the bioeconomy is a key element for the functioning and performance of the EU economy. The introduction of a sustainable European bioeconomy would lead to job creation, especially in coastal regions and rural areas, as primary producers would increasingly participate in their local bio-economies through various spheres of agribusiness.

According to sector estimates, one million new jobs could be created in biomass-intensive industries by 2030. A sustainable bioeconomy is also key to reducing emissions in the European energy sector. It supports the modernization and strengthening of the industrial base by creating new value chains and greener, more economical industrial processes. Research and innovation and the introduction of innovative solutions for the production of new and sustainable products derived from biological raw materials (such as biochemicals, biofuels, etc.) will increase our capacity to replace fossil fuels in highly important parts of European industry.

The limited biological resources and ecosystems of our planet are necessary for human consumption and the supply of clean water and clean energy at an affordable price. A sustainable bioeconomy is key to addressing climate change and the degradation of soils and ecosystems. It will meet the growing demand for food, feed, energy, materials and products, and reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources.

The aim of the scientific conference is to bring together stakeholders from the agri-food sector, from producers to en-users, including scientists, consultants and government officials, to raise awareness of the importance of innovation and the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy to reduce climate change and continue to ensure a secure food supply for the world’s growing population.

The conference will enable the exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas among participants aimed at creating a successful and sustainable agribusiness based on innovation.

The conference is a unique opportunity to promote the agro-economic profession, especially scientific and practical results and solutions in the field of agribusiness.

Papers presented at the scientific-professional conference will be published in the journal Agroeconomia Croatica, ISSN 1333-2422, and abstracts will be published in the Book of Abstracts of the Conference published by the Croatian Agroeconomic Society.
